The CrossFit Athlete's Guide to Injury Prevention: Wrist and Elbow

Number 4: Wrist and Elbow— and how to train smart enough to avoid them.

CrossFit is one of the most demanding training formats on the planet. It combines Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics, metabolic conditioning, and competitive intensity — often in the same session. It's also one of the most rewarding. But with high demand comes high injury risk, especially when training load, technique, or recovery aren't managed well.

The good news? Most CrossFit injuries are preventable. At Reforge Physio, we work with CrossFit athletes every day — and we see the same patterns come up again and again. This guide breaks down the five most common injury risks in CrossFit and gives you practical, evidence-based strategies to train smarter and stay on the floor.

4. Wrist and elbow pain

Wrists cop a lot of load in CrossFit — front rack positions, barbell cycling, hand-stand holds, and pulling movements all place significant demand on the wrist and forearm. Elbow pain (commonly lateral epicondylalgia, or 'tennis elbow') is also increasingly common in athletes who do a lot of barbell cycling and gymnastics.

Why it happens

•       Limited wrist extension causing compensation in the front rack and receiving position

•       High-volume barbell cycling creating repetitive forearm strain

•       Grip fatigue during pulling movements leading to altered mechanics

•       Jumping into ring work without adequate wrist preparation

How to train smart

•       Spend 5 minutes on wrist prep before every session: circles, loaded progressive stretching, wrist push-ups

•       If your front rack is uncomfortable, address wrist and lat mobility rather than compensating with a wider grip

•       Scale barbell cycling reps when forearm pump is affecting your form

•       Build wrist strength progressively before attempting loaded handstand work

Reforge tip

Wrist mobility is often the missing piece for athletes struggling with the front rack or snatch receiving position. A single session with us can identify exactly what's limiting you and give you a targeted plan to fix it.
